waste container restyle

Approaching the topic of the prize, we questioned ourselves about our city’s needs and what could be done to satisfy them. Analyzing Turin’s demographic, analyzing turin’s demographics, we can see that our city has become increasingly more multiethnical over the past few years and the disparity among degrees of education has become wider. One of the problems big italian cities have is the accumulation, disposal and the recycling process of refuse. Over time, cities have begun to improve waste management by substituting older dumpsters with newer models, coloured differently for each waste category. This strategy hasn’t been succeful, so, our city had to build a waste-to-energy plant to conpensate the influx of garbage produced by its citizens. Knowing this data, we asked ourselves: “how can we make citizens more sensible to recycling and overcome the cultural and linguistic barriers our demographic has?”. This is why we opted on using an easier visual and perceptive language; distinguishing each bin not by its colour or what its written on top of it, but rather, by re-shaping the dumpsters to resemble the shape of the waste to which they are dedicated to.
