USE, Urban Safety Everyday
Urban and Public Furniture Design
THIS IS NOT JUST A PUBLIC FURNITURE! USE (Urban Safety Everyday) is not public furniture, but a circular economy project, born from relationships and collaborations that involve a territory and the parts that live in it: municipality, industries, innovative companies, designers and citizens. THE MATERIAL USE is made by 100% plastics from recycled tetra pak! The recycled plastic necessary for the realization of USE comes entirely from the recycling of Tetra Pak beverage cartons carried out by the Lucart company, world leader in the production of paper and tissue, constantly committed to production sustainability and which can boast important partnerships such as the one with Ellen Macarthur Foundation. Since 2010 Lucart has started a project together with Tetra Pak®, the Swedish manufacturer of containers, to recycle it at 100 percent. Lucart, in fact, has created a state-of-the-art plant (one of the few in Europe) dedicated to this specificprocess in Lucca. The portion of recovered cellulose, about 75%, is transformed into a material called FiberPack®, with which are produced toilet paper, kitchen towels, napkins, handkerchiefs and other disposable items, while the remaining 25%, formed from polyethylene and aluminum, was chosen and used as a raw-secondary material to produce USE street furniture, a precious resource coming from the door to door collect. CONCEPT USE is a project born from the thesis for master degree of Giulia del grande. “My thesys was: “An equipment of no-fear for the city. Lucca’s historic center anti-terrorism barriers”, it was a confirm of my interest in useful architecture, in urban context with a psychological foundation and it’s the reason why I’m here now. I had the pleasure and the luck to meet the R3direct group. Togheter we are continuing the idea to create an urban equipment. So we worked on the project that we’re showing. Our intent is to create a new object that could be printed, following an idea of circular economy, and that could be useful and smart for Publics Administrations. “In 2017 the Architect Stefano Boeri suggested to decorate cities with art and vegetation. It was the consequence of an urgency. Indeed from that year there have been a concrete new jersey invasion in the cities. They’re necessary to protect pedestrian area during events or to defend monumental spaces. They’re the answer to a safety and securety request. From 2016 many European cities were the location of islamic vehicular terrorism. It consist in the incursion of a car, with an high speed, on a crowd. It was the starting point of my architectural thesis. The study helps me to understand the unconnection between the fear and the real risk. Often this problem is the cause of the panic among people, and it could be very dangerous if it involves a large number of persons. So the desire behind the project is to create something useful for the city, that takes away fear. Togheter with this project idea there is the ambition to make a product for the city and that comes from itself. ” THE DESIGN AND THE MANIFACTURING USE are designed by Stefano Giovacchini, designer and co-founder of R3direct. Thanks to innovative 3D technologies, R3direct print durable and customizable objects made with post-consume plastics R3direct design using parametric technology, it allows them to make small productions with modifications for each printed piece, and it’s ideal for products in continuous development CUSTOMER. The municipality of Lucca has commissioned and planned the installation of some coverings for bollards, to be used during city events.
