CARLO BACH – Art Director, illy
Carlo Bach is an internationally renowned artist. Since 1999 he has collaborated on the artistic projects of illycaffè, becoming Art Director in 2005. He develops collaborations with well-known contemporary artists as well as emerging talents, for the realization of the illy Art Collection, the signature espresso cups that are now a cult. He is also responsible for Illy Gallery – the temporary space imagined to describe illy’s world of passions to the public – and the Coffee Pavilion created for the Milan Expo in 2015.
PHILIP BATTIN – Design Manager at Google, Jury Chair of INDEX: Award
Philip Battin serves as Design Manager at Google, where he oversees a strategic design team tasked to envision and incubate future product concepts for the technology firm’s consumer electronics division. Passionate about the transformative potential of design and technology, Philip is a member of the CPH150 think tank and serves as the Jury Chair of INDEX: Award, the world’s biggest design award, focused on design to improve life. Philip holds an MSc in Strategic Product Design from Delft University of Technology and a BA in Design from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation. Battin has over 10 years of industry experience and is known for his design work for clients such as Mercedes-Benz, Red Bull, Adidas, Sony and Norse Projects which has been published in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Dezeen, Wallpaper and Vogue.
DESIREE BOLLIER – Chair and Global Chief Merchant for Value Retail Management
Desirée Bollier is Chair & Chief Merchant of Value Retail Management (operator of The Bicester Village Shopping Collection), a driving force behind placing premium shopping tourism firmly on the global stage. Her career started in the United States with various management roles culminating as Senior Vice President of Retail at Polo Ralph Lauren for Europe and the Gulf. Bollier is Vice Chair European Union and the United Kingdom of the World Travel & Tourism Council. She sits on the Advisory Boards of FeelAPlace and the British Fashion Council, and on the Corporate Advisory Board of the Royal Academy of Arts.
GIULIO BONAZZI – Chairman & CEO of Aquafil Group
Giulio Bonazzi is the Chairman and CEO of Aquafil SpA. An innovator and disruptor, Bonazzi is transforming his family-run manufacturing business into a sustainable global enterprise by turning trash from landfill and oceans into high-quality, beautiful fibers. Today, Aquafil is recognized as a sustainability leader company and a stalwart example of circular economy with 16 plants in eight countries across three continents. Bonazzi was honoured with Ernst & Young’s 2011 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the industrial products category for his entrepreneurial excellence and leadership ability in globally expanding Aquafil SpA. In the same year, his dream to produce yarns 100 percent from waste became a reality with ECONYL®.
GIULIO CAPPELLINI – Architect & Art Director
Giulio Cappellini joined Cappellini S.p.A. in 1979. He personally curates the image and products of all the Cappellini brands as both Art Director and in some cases as a designer. Many Cappellini products are present in the Permanent Collections of the main museums of contemporary art. He also collaborates with opinion leaders in the drafting of various texts on the history of design. Recently he was elected by Time magazine as one of the ten world trend setters of fashion and design and ambassador of excellence of Italian design in the world. Giulio Cappellini is also the Art Director of the Ceramica Flaminia companies and of Istituto Marangoni Design Campus. He teaches as a visiting professor in many faculties of design and architecture around the world and organizes exhibitions and events including the “Temporary Museum for Design” at Superstudio Più in Milan and Italian Hospitality at the Singapore fair. He collaborates as a project leader with Oikos and Tod’s on special projects involving designers from all over the world.
LI EDELKOORT – Trend forecaster
Lidewij Edelkoort is arguably the world’s most famous trend forecaster. Her company Trend Union produces forecasts which are used by strategists, designers and market leaders at brands in all price points, ranging from design and interiors to communication, textiles, food and fashion. Edelkoort is also a publisher, humanitarian, educator and exhibition curator. In 2011, she launched an interactive online trend forum called Trend Tablet. Since 2015, she is Dean of Hybrid Studies at Parsons in New York where she has established a Masters in Textiles and New York Textile Month each September. Edelkoort has been named by TIME Magazine as one of the Most Influential People in Fashion and by Icon Magazine as one of the Most Influential People in Design.
MARCUS FAIRS – Founder & Editor in Chief of Dezeen
Marcus Fairs is founder and editor-in-chief of Dezeen. Launched in November 2006, the site now attracts over two million unique visitors every month and is widely regarded as the most influential and popular design website in the world. A 3D design graduate, Marcus began his journalism career writing for Building Design. In 2003 he launched icon and edited the publication until November 2006. He also freelanced for publications including Blueprint, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday and Conde Nast Traveller. Fairs has received many awards and recognitions, for both his journalism and leadership of various publications – in January 2017 he was the first digital journalist to be awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and in 2018 he was named one of the 1,000 most influential people in London by the Evening Standard. Marcus regularly appears on radio and TV, written various books and has spoken at conferences in London, Tokyo, New York, Stockholm and Cape Town.
CRISTINA GABETTI – Strategy and Sustainability Advisor
Journalist and writer with American roots and Italian upbringing. Cristina began her career as an entertainment reporter for Mediaset TV national news programs, showcasing the art and passions of rock, performing arts and fashion icons. Becoming a mother, she started investigating the impact of our daily lives on society and the environment and, caught in the gap between what we know and how we live, she began experimenting eco solutions. Discovering a world of opportunities and creative challenges, changing habits became a passionate mission. In 2008 she shared the experience in her first book, Tentativi di Eco Condotta, which brought her back on TV with Occhio allo Spreco, a weekly segment on eco behaviour for the popular program Striscia la notizia. Three more books followed, including one for schoolchildren, Tondo Come il Mondo, which to date has reached a million students. With her current TV segment, Occhio al Futuro, she explores the synergies between ecology and technology. She is a speaker and moderator at conferences on future proof development and sustainability advisor for events.
PIERO GANDINI – Executive Chairman Design Holding
Piero Gandini joined Flos after high school. His father Sergio had been chairman of the leading lighting company since 1964. Initially working for the group’s German division, before joining Flos S.p.A. in 1988 as New Product Development Manager. In this period he worked closely with the great contemporary Italian industrial designers, while promoting the exclusive collaborations with talented, young international designers. In 1996 Gandini was appointed CEO of Flos, becoming Chairman of the company in 1999. Piero Gandini has been holding numerous institutional positions outside his own company. At Assoluce, Italy’s leading business association in the lighting sector, he has been Chairman for two mandates, from 2008 to 2013. Since December 2018, following the creation of Design Holding, the biggest global group in high-end interior design, which brings together B&B Italia, Flos and Louis Poulsen, Gandini became Chairman of the new group, also maintaining his role of CEO at Flos.
MARVA GRIFFIN WILSHIRE – Founder and Curator of SaloneSatellite
Marva Griffin Wilshire began her career as PR communication at C&B Italia (now B&B Italia). In 1998 Marva founded and continues to curate SaloneSatellite within Salone Internazionale del Mobile that represents a showcase for young creative designers and graduate-to-be students from all over the world. Later founding SaloneSatellite Moscow in 2005 and SaloneSatellite Shanghai in 2016. Since 2001, Griffin Wilshire has been a member of the Philip Johnson Architecture and Design Committee at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMa), New York, U.S.A. In December 2016 she was named Italian Design Ambassador by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For almost 20 years she’s been Correspondent/Representative in Italy for a number of Conde Nast Publications. In May 2014 she received the Premio Compasso d’Oro XXIII alla Carriera.
ARTHUR HUANG – CEO & Founder of Miniwiz
Arthur Huang is the founder and CEO of Miniwiz. He is a structural engineer, architect, innovator of loop economy building material solutions and specialized in post-consumer trash recycling applications. In 2005, he established Miniwiz, an internationally operating company based in Taiwan, Shanghai and Berlin, dedicated to upcycling and consumer trash and industrial waste. Known for his innovative and ambitious concepts, many of his works challenge the traditional linear economy, ranging from representatives of consumer products to architectures. In 2015, Arthur and Miniwiz were recognized as Technology Pioneer by World Economic Forum.
RAVI NAIDOO – Founder of Design Indaba
Ravi Naidoo is the managing director of Interactive Africa, which he founded in 1994. The company combines marketing, project management, logistic prowess and creative production to work on projects that promote South Africa.Naidoo is known for establishing the international Design Indaba, recognised as one of the world’s leading design institutions through the flagship Design Indaba Conference and Festival annually held in Cape Town. Naidoo sits on the jury of the Index Awards in Copenhagen, and holds a seat on the jury of the Dutch Design Awards, was a judge for the D&AD Impact Awards 2016, and has also been appointed as Chairman of the 2017 IXDA Awards.
PAUL ROSE – Leader, Geographic Seas Expeditions, National Geographic
Paul Rose is one of the world’s most experienced science expedition leaders, helping scientists unlock and communicate global mysteries in the most remote and challenging regions of the planet. He presents BBC television programmes and reports on current affairs focused on science and the environment. He was the Base Commander of Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, for the British Antarctic Survey for 10 years and was awarded HM The Queen’s Polar Medal. A mountain in Antarctica is named after him. Rose is Former Vice President of the Royal Geographical Society and is currently Expedition Leader for the National Geographic Pristine Seas Expeditions.
IVY ROSS – Vice President, Design for Hardware Products at Google
Ivy Ross is the Vice President of Design for the Hardware organization at Google, formed in 2016. Since 2017, she and her team launched a family of consumer hardware products ranging from smartphones to smart speakers, earning 56 different design awards. Ivy has held executive positions spanning from head of product design and development to CMO and presidencies with several companies, including Calvin Klein, Swatch, Coach, Mattel, Art.com, Bausch & Lomb and Gap. Ross has been a contributing author to numerous books, she was the keynote speaker at the Nokia World Design Conference and Fortune Magazine’s Most Powerful Women Summit, and has been cited by Fast Company and Businessweek as “one of the new faces of Leadership.” A renowned artist, her innovative metal work in jewelry is in the permanent collections of 12 international museums. A winner of the prestigious National Endowment for the Arts grant, Ivy has also received the Women in Design Award and Diamond International Award for her creative designs.
CUIMING YUAN – Chemical researcher
Dr. Yuan Cuiming graduated from Tongji University in Shanghai with a Ph.D. in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Milan; is CEO of First Italy srl and general manager of the Italy China United Association. From 2003 until 2013 he was a Strategic Officer for the Italy-China Foundation. Dr. Cuiming was appointed Guest Scientific Researcher for ENI from 1988 to 1994. From 1995 to 1998, Guest Professor in the Department of Organic and Industrial Chemistry of the University of Milan. Since 1999 he has been the senior scientific consultant of Rhodia (Belgian Solvay group). He has published more than 50 scientific articles and 10 international patents in the fields of advanced materials and the innovative processes of polymers.
