SOL- A Jumping rope capable of producing energy
Inspiring Learning Projects
The objective is to show the potentially lifesaving value of e-waste if recycled properly, in addition to the diversity of recycled plastics.
The first prototype will be built using additive manufacturing techniques using recycled Abs filament. The DC motors will be obtained from a thrown away children’s toys, the batteries, and other electrical components will be salvaged from recycled e-waste and discarded power banks, The string for the jump rope will be made by recycling polyester fishnets.
A website with publicly available resources will be launched. There will be examples of where the components can be found inside common toys, as well as how and why they are used. This is to increase awareness on how valuable “junk” components can be in different contexts as well as providing learning materials on how to identify mechatronic components. There will be resources that inform people of how hazardous the improper disposable of lithium batteries can be as well as how potentially lifesaving they can be under different conditions.
A complete instruction manual and an online app will be used in combination to enable:
1. Dimensioning a model according to the available motor and batteries to be repurposed.
2. Another online calculator will be used to state the alternatives for the type of circuit components that are compatible with the selected motor and batteries.
3. Instructions on alternative sustainable methods of producing the molds from recycled plastics will be provided.
4. Detailed assembly instructions will follow.
So that anyone can both learn and build this model
In the meanwhile, we will be trying to find a partnership both in the acquisition and mass production of the product. It is our aim to make 3 molds for mass production. 2 of these molds will be for recycled Polyethylene and the mold that must be transparent will use recycled polycarbonate. If we are successful there will be 2 additional ways to access this product.
The ability to order the completely manufactured product or:
The molds can be ordered with instructions on how to acquire and assemble the digital components and where they can be commonly found.
