The Flow Chair
Urban and Public Design
The “Flow” chair is the first of our collection of sustainable 3D printed furniture and accessories. Sustainability is one of our core principles in architecture and design. We like to raise awareness for the fragility of our ecosystems and create innovative solutions to reduce plastic waste. We are also exploring new ways to use recycled plastics 3D printed for large architecture surfaces and interiors. The collection is printed by Nagami, a 3D printing studio in Spain. The flow chair is printed with 100% recycled PETG, coming from recycled medical equipment . Nagami has a partnership with Parley for the Oceans, a charity to clean the oceans, and use their Ocean Plastics in many of their products, who receive a 10% commission of the sale of the products. The Flow chair is supposed to follow the organic shape of our body. From the back you can see the curvilinear lines, which are alluding to our organic body shape. It is about flow and fluidity as that is what life is about, overcoming any stagnation. The flow chair is very comfortable when leaning back one can bounce a bit to find the right comfort. The ‘Flow chair’ has been nominated for the Eco Award 2021. Beyond the material, 3D printing is an incredibly sustainable and clean manufacturing solution. Nagami ’s printing cells are compact and versatile, this allows for the creation of on-demand products (zero-waste) while cutting the production chain short. Rather than setting up large infrastructures for the repetition of a single product (common set-up in product manufacturing), Nagami can continuously switch from one product to another and introduce customisation. Our goal is to look for local manufacturing in the near future, which will lead to a dramatic reduction in the carbon footprint associated with long-range shipping. The purpose is to reuse the waste already existing all over the world and creatively repurposing it in order not to create new waste as architects and designers.
