Urban and Public Design
The Segment chair is a quick assembly low chair, showcasing the beauty of Smile Plastics’ upcycled plastics boards, that can create various bench installations for outdoor and indoor events. Several low chair pieces form an installation as a continuous bench, made as an invitation to relax, exchange and contemplate the landscape around. Already used in an ephemeral outdoor event and an art residency, the chair got much interest for various purposes and contexts, such as indoor/outdoor concert or festival, eco-building and offices lobbies, garden bench, school bench, booth furniture, art centre furniture, fashion shows, etc. With the Smile chair, we wanted to raise the issue of wastes in the event industry. Our answer resides in promoting reuse for ephemeral installations. The design is made out of a single board CNC cut. Its simple construction allows an easy and fast assembly, as well as flat pack storage, for various occasions. This adventure started with the Paris Design Week’s call for project of design installation for their event. Because our aim was to create a sustainable installation, we contacted Smile Plastic to offer them a collaboration, that they accepted with enthusiasm! They liked the project for its minimalist drawing, its versatility and cleverness of assembly. We are now looking to finalize the product (shipment & storage packaging, production details), promote it in fairs and enlarge the range of product (table, other chair configuration). Smile Plastics is willing to produce and edit (or co-edit) the chair: they are now studying potential market (leasing, selling) prices and customer opportunities. We are glad to collaborate with them on this venture, to promote their materials, and the values it carries. As a result, the segment chair can be considered sustainable by: – its versatility, its shape allow the creation of many different set-ups such as waves, circles or isle. – its usage, the construction made out of board is ideal for storage, and its easy to assemble. – its material, 100% made from plastic waste , the board are recycled and recyclable again in new boards, closing the loop at the end of the chair’s life. – its shape, the minimalist and timeless design allows it to be use in various situations, for a long time.
