JOY&JAFFA
Urban and Public Design
Have you ever had the feeling that a hook is missing? We got the idea to create a modular hook system by noticing once again at a shabby university bathroom that public spaces seem to lack hooks. And wherever they are present, they are often not only unaesthetical but unfunctional: too high, too low, too small! Hooks are as much indispensable as overseen, even though they are highly demanded design objects, which do ask for a proper design. We would like to rethink what a hook can be and what it should be by starting right at the pulse of time: Our hook system claims to be innovatively durable since it is based on a cradle-to-cradle principle: The plastic wasted by society is reused in matter of solving an important public issue. Our idea is to combine the hook with a tile-system. JOY&JAFFA is a two-piece hook system that combines a wall tile with a coat hook. Of course our system is not only meant for coats but anything that requires a strong and trustworthy hold. The base plate is attached to the wall (like a tile), while the hook is hooked into the base plate. Together it forms a modular tile-hook. Thereby the room serves as a place of its own interpretation, to which the wall ornament – as variable as it is – can be adapted and unfolded as desired. JOY&JAFFA can be a wall of tiles, can be a single hook, can be a mixture of hooks and tiles. Accordingly, JOY&JAFFA can be applicated to huge office walls, to small bathrooms, to canteen-walls, to dentist waiting-rooms, to hospital rooms, to lobbies of museums, indoors as well as outdoors, for kids, for adults, for private and for public use. The improvements we aim at are therefore multiple: It is not only about the embellishment of any possible wall. Indeed, JOY&JAFFA offers an indefinite range of applications. It’ s basic idea is to manufacture a highly robust and long-living functional system meeting the needs of society, using the waste of society.
