Mabo Plate and Packaging
Responsible Innovation Projects
ecoBirdy packaging design for the Mabo plate ecoBirdy’s Mabo plate is an eye catcher with its beautiful marble-like pattern and soft shapes, evocative of porcelain yet made entirely of recycled plastic. Not only does the tableware feature a unique style and production technique, but the designers Vanessa Yuan and Joris Vanbriel have also given a lot of thought to the packaging . “It is an integral part of our ethos to make the most of our earth’s precious resources and avoid unnecessary waste. This applies to whatever we do, also to the packaging,” says Joris Van Briel. If using carton board made from recycled or FSC certified paper for packaging was the only thing to consider, it would be way too easy. That should be done in any case. As always, ecoBirdy goes one step further. The packaging has been designed to leave as little as possible waste during the production. A carefully planned cut-out makes it possible to use the entire cardboard sheet to create a compact packaging box for the Mabo plate. This is in contrast to many other packaging boxes where, during the production process, lots of pieces are left over and simply thrown away. Like the art of origami, the cardboard is folded from a flat sheet of paper into a compact, self-standing box without the need of even one drop of glue. Once the Mabo plate set has been unpacked, the packaging can easily be unfolded and stored without taking up much room. It is strong enough and has the perfect size to be reused for multiple purposes, while it is entirely recyclable once its life is over. Store: Unfold the box into one single cardboard sheet, to save space and for easy storage. Reuse: When folded from the reverse side, the box is free from any print, perfect for reuse. Recycle: Easy to unfold, entirely recyclable.
